Talk Is Cheap — Action Is Everything
If you’ve listened to the Built Not Wished podcast for any length of time, you already know something about me.
I’m not a CEO. I’m not the most fit guy in the room. I’m not some productivity guru with a perfect morning routine and a six-pack.
I’m an average guy with average skills.
But I’ve learned something powerful over the years working in industrial manufacturing:
Systems work.
And the tools that build world-class factories can build a strong, disciplined, meaningful life.
Why I Do This Podcast
I don’t do this podcast because I have all the answers.
I do it because I discovered that the same tools we use to solve problems on a manufacturing floor — root cause analysis, standard work, daily accountability, A3 thinking — can absolutely transform everyday life.
Want to lose weight? There’s a system for that.
Want to improve your marriage? There’s a system for that.
Want to build discipline, grow your income, strengthen your faith, or sharpen your focus? There’s a system for that.
But there’s one ingredient that every system requires.
Action.
“Talk Is Cheap”
One old saying I’ve been thinking about lately is this:
Talk is cheap.
Why would anyone say that?
Probably because they’ve been disappointed.
Someone promised they would show up — and didn’t. Someone said they would change — and didn’t. Someone talked about their goals — but never moved.
In those situations, talk truly is cheap.
Words cost nothing.
But action costs something.
It costs effort. It costs discomfort. It costs pride. It costs time.
And that’s why so few people consistently take it.
We Are Not God
There’s another reason talk is cheap.
We are not God.
Our words don’t create reality.
We can say we’re going to get in shape. We can say we’re going to start the business. We can say we’re going to fix the relationship.
But unlike the Creator, our words alone don’t bring things into existence.
Creation requires action.
Action is the proof of belief.
Action is the evidence of commitment.
Action is what separates wishing from building.
And this podcast is called Built Not Wished for a reason.
The Five-Second Problem
Here’s something else I’ve noticed:
Most of the old sayings become incredibly true when you think about them for more than five seconds.
The problem?
Thinking about anything for more than five seconds is hard today.
We live in a world of scroll, swipe, react.
Very little pause. Very little reflection. Very little intentional movement.
But growth requires pause.
And it requires a decision.
One Small Action Every Day
You don’t need a 10-year master plan tonight.
You need one action.
Just one.
One small movement toward your goal. One text you need to send. One workout. One page written. One apology made. One budget reviewed. One temptation resisted.
That’s it.
One step.
Then tomorrow, another.
This is not motivational fluff. This is operational reality.
In manufacturing, nothing improves without a daily action step. No corrective action? No improvement. No follow-up? No change. No measurement? No progress.
Life works the same way.
A3 Thinking for Real Life
If you’ve heard me talk about A3 Thinking, you know it’s a simple but powerful structured problem-solving method.
In the plant, it looks like this:
Define the current state
Define the target state
Identify the gap
Determine root cause
Implement countermeasures
Follow up
That’s not just for factories.
That’s for your body. Your finances. Your habits. Your relationships. Your future.
If your current state is 240 pounds and your target state is 210 — what’s the gap?If your current savings is zero and your target is $10,000 — what’s the gap? If your marriage feels distant and your target is connection — what’s the gap?
Then ask:
What is one countermeasure I can take today?
That’s A3 thinking.
That’s how things get built.
Why I’m Writing This
That’s why I’m sitting here typing this blog right now.
Not because I “feel inspired.”
Not because I have it all figured out.
But because writing this is one small action toward the mission of this podcast.
Consistency over intensity. Systems over emotion. Action over talk.
Let’s Do This Together
I’m not above you. I’m not ahead of you by miles.
I’m walking with you.
And I’m inviting you to join me.
Let’s do one small thing today that moves us closer to:
Our goal
Our target
Our future state
Don’t announce it. Don’t post about it .Don’t talk about it.
Do it.
Because in the end:
Talk is cheap. Action builds.
And a life worth having is Built. Not Wished.
